What We Do

Supporting wellbeing, education and opportunity through community-led programs

At Help Lesotho, we believe that sustainable change requires a whole-person approach. We don’t just provide services – we build resilience that is broadly applicable.

Our approach is rooted in empowering the people of Lesotho to help themselves as they navigate challenges and help build thriving families and communities.

Why is Help Lesotho Needed?

HIV/AIDS decimated a generation, fractured families, and left a massive cohort of children and youth broken and vulnerable. When families are in survival mode, young people miss out on the support structures that typically instill life skills.

Today, nearly one in four people in Lesotho are HIV positive, half the population lives in poverty, 86% of women and girls report experiences of gender-based violence, and Lesotho has one of the world’s highest suicide rates.

Help Lesotho exists to ignite hope and resilience in Lesotho’s young people, and ultimately contribute to a thriving Lesotho.

Our Impact Pillars

Help Lesotho’s impact is built on five integrated pillars, each targeting a distinct area of need, and all working together to heal trauma, break cycles of poverty, and create lasting pathways to independence.

The People We Work With

We support children and youth and the people who influence their lives. Young people make up more than half of Lesotho’s population and many are growing up without the family and community supports to help them thrive.

By reaching multiple members of the same household, Help Lesotho creates an ecosystem of shared learning and mutual support that extends the impact of programming far beyond the individual

Our Community-Led Approach

Help Lesotho employs a grassroots, community-led model driven by our dedicated local Basotho staff. By centering our programs in Hlotse and Pitseng, we ensure that every program is culturally relevant, trusted, and built for long-term sustainability.

We collaborate directly with community leaders, schools, and caregivers to move beyond temporary aid, focusing instead on primary prevention, local capacity-building, and systemic change.

How Our Programs are Delivered

Our programs are organized into core areas that support multiple Impact Pillars and respond to community needs.

  • Community Centres
Safe hubs in Hlotse and Pitseng offer intergenerational support and a secure environment for children and youth.
  • Comprehensive Life Skills
Intensive, 10+ day cohort training building resilience and agency.
  • Community Advocacy
Edutainment performances that challenge social norms to promote gender equity.
  • Camps & Workshops
Residential sessions focused on personal growth, vocational skills, and drive demand for health services.
  • School Support
Academic sponsorships and tutoring to keep vulnerable students in the classroom.

“I’ve never been in such a healthy environment.”

Why Our Approach Works

The five impact pillars are interconnected and reinforce one another.

  • Mental health supports learning and engagement,
  • Gender equity improves safety and wellbeing,
  • Education and leadership expand opportunity,
  • Stable households support long-term outcomes.

Together, these areas create lasting impact that extends beyond individual programs and contribute to stronger and more resilient communities.

Our Theory of Change

Help Lesotho’s mission is guided by a rigorous Theory of Change that connects our community-based interventions to long-term, sustainable outcomes for youth and families.

We don’t just track activities; we measure how our programs contribute to systemic change over time.
