Gender Equity &
Violence Prevention
- Safer Communities -
We work to prevent gender-based violence by addressing harmful norms, promoting equity, and engaging girls, boys, women, and men as partners in change. Through community-based education and youth leadership, we support safer, more respectful relationships and communities where violence is not tolerated.
Change often starts with conversation - where new perspectives begin to take shape.
The Challenge
Gender-based violence remains a critical issue in Lesotho, driven by harmful norms, unequal power, and limited opportunities for dialogue and prevention. Girls and women face heightened risks, while boys and men are often excluded from conversations about gender equity - limiting meaningful change.

Ntate Lesiba is a community chief. He began using strategies he learned in Help Lesotho trainings to do direct conflict mitigation with the 200 families in his community, and since then, there have been no reported cases of abuse or gender-based violence.
Our Approach
Help Lesotho works to prevent violence before it occurs by addressing root causes. We increase community member awareness of their power to stop violence. We engage girls, boys, women, and men in honest conversations about gender, power, respect, and healthy relationships. Through community workshops, youth programs, and leadership development, we support shifts in attitudes and behaviors that make violence unacceptable.
Examples of Gender Equity and Violence Prevention Programming in Action
- GIRL4ce: Art That Moves Communities to Act
Every year, Help Lesotho's edutainment group GIRL4ce performs for thousands of people across Lesotho - using drama and song to confront gender-based violence in a way that invites reflection rather than defensiveness. By telling these stories through art, GIRL4ce opens doors that direct messaging often can't: audiences see themselves in the performance, and are moved to act. - Engaging Young Men as Part of the Solution
Lasting change requires everyone. Help Lesotho works with young men and herd boys to explore what gender equity actually means for them - not as a burden or concession, but as something that benefits their communities, their relationships, and their own lives. Equipped with this understanding, they become active participants in reducing gender-based violence, not just bystanders. - Building Systems That Protect People
Community leaders, police officers, and healthcare workers take part in a year-long program that goes beyond awareness. Participants deepen their commitment to creating safer communities - strengthening the support available to survivors of abuse, and working to shift the norms and attitudes that allow violence to persist in the first place.

Key Outcomes
Our programs are designed to achieve measurable shifts in how gender and safety are perceived and practiced, including:
-
Increased understanding of gender equity and respectful relationships
-
Positive shifts in attitudes among boys and young men
-
Greater awareness of rights, consent, and safety
-
Stronger community responsibility for preventing violence
Promoting gender equity is foundational to strengthening the safety, dignity, and opportunity of young people across Lesotho.

What Changes
Participants begin to challenge harmful norms and model respectful behavior. Boys become allies. Girls gain confidence to speak and lead. Communities move from silence to shared accountability for preventing violence.
Why this Matters
Ending gender-based violence requires prevention, not just response. When norms change, communities become safer, healthier, and more equitable - creating lasting impact for generations to come.
