Community Care
& Household
Support
- Building Blocks -
We strengthen households and communities as the foundation for children’s wellbeing, working across generations to support caregivers, families, and local leadership. Through inter-generational, community-led approaches, we build sustainable systems of care that enable children and youth to thrive.
Behind every young person is a network of care that helps them feel safe, supported, and able to grow.
The Challenge
In Lesotho, children and youth are often raised in complex household structures shaped by poverty, migration, illness, and loss. Grandparents, older siblings, and extended family members frequently take on caregiving roles with limited resources and support. When households are under strain, children’s safety, wellbeing, and ability to learn are at risk - and the burden is felt across generations.

Caring for eight orphaned grandchildren, Matsutsubi learned that healing herself was the first step to healing her home. Today, she is the steady, nurturing role model her grandchildren need most.
Our Approach
Help Lesotho strengthens households and communities as the frontline of care, intentionally working across generations. Our programming support caregivers of all ages - parents, grandparents, young mothers, and older siblings - while creating opportunities for children and youth to learn, grow, and contribute.
We use inter-generational programming that brings together children, caregivers, and community members to strengthen relationships, share knowledge, and build mutual support. By investing in both caregivers and young people, we reinforce a cycle of care, resilience, and responsibility that is rooted in local culture and leadership.
Examples of Community Care and Household Strengthening Programming
- Grandmothers: The Backbone of Their Families, Supported at Last
Across Lesotho, grandmothers are quietly raising the next generation - stepping in as primary caregivers for orphaned grandchildren, often without preparation or support. Over two years, monthly life skills training days give these women practical tools - communication strategies, conflict resolution, child development knowledge - alongside something equally vital: each other. The community they build together is as important as any skill they learn. - Bringing Families into the Room
Help Lesotho's youth programs don't just work with young people; they work with the families around them. At least one session in every immersive youth program brings parents and guardians into the conversation. These sessions create a rare, structured space for honest dialogue across generations - breaking down assumptions, surfacing unspoken tensions, and laying a foundation for relationships to grow. - Learning to Parent. Breaking the Cycle.
Many of Help Lesotho's participants grew up without a stable, nurturing parenting relationship of their own. Positive Parenting workshops - one of Help Lesotho's newest initiatives - meets that reality head-on. Grounded in evidence-based principles, sessions help participants understand their child's developmental needs and respond with intention.
Key Outcomes
Our programs are designed to achieve measurable shifts in household stability and the strength of local support systems, including:
-
Stronger caregiver confidence and capacity
-
Improved household stability and support for children
-
Increased community participation and volunteer leadership
-
Healthier relationships between children, youth, and caregivers

What Changes
Caregivers feel more confident and supported in their roles. Children experience greater consistency, safety, and encouragement at home and in their communities. Young people step into positive roles as mentors and volunteers, strengthening bonds between generations and reinforcing shared responsibility for care.
Why this Matters
Sustainable change does not happen in isolation - it happens in families and across generations. When households are supported and inter-generational relationships are strengthened, children are safer, education is reinforced, and communities become more resilient. This approach ensures that impact endures long after any single program ends.
How Community & Family Support Strengthens Our Impact Pillars
A stable and supportive household is the essential foundation for a young person’s development. By strengthening the Network of Care around every child, we amplify the effectiveness and sustainability of all our core programs:
Mental Health & Resilience
Providing the emotional security and stability at home that allows young people to fully engage with their own healing and growth.
Education & Leadership
Ensuring that caregivers prioritize school engagement and academic success, creating a home environment that values long-term opportunity.
Gender Equity & Safety
Engaging the entire family unit to challenge harmful norms, ensuring that dignity, respect, and safety are practiced within the home.
By reinforcing these intergenerational systems of support, we ensure that our impact lasts far beyond our direct intervention, creating a permanent culture of care.
Hope in Action
Support systems at home and in the community shape how young people grow and develop.
