Herd Boy Empowerment Project 2026

With your support, 100 herd boys in Lesotho will become leaders, allies, and agents of change.

In the highlands of Lesotho, thousands of boys grow up unseen.

From as young as six, herd boys live alone in the mountains, tending sheep and cattle for long days and nights. Most leave school early. Many grow up isolated, unsupported, and invisible to the systems meant to protect them.

Without guidance or role models, some turn to silence, anger, or harmful behaviors—not because they are bad, but because they have been forgotten.

Your support can change that.

The Problem: Why This Matters

Herd boys are among the most marginalized youth in Lesotho.

They face:

  • Exploitation, including child labour
  • Isolation and poor mental health
  • Little access to education or healthcare
  • High risk of becoming both victims and perpetrators of violence
  • No safe space to learn about rights, relationships, or wellbeing

When boys are left behind, entire communities are affected.

The Solution: Help Lesotho’s Herd Boys Program

Help Lesotho has been working with herd boys since 2013 - successfully reaching a population many others could not.

Why it works:

  • Programs are led by Basotho facilitators, many with lived experience as herd boys
  • Trust is built over time through respect and consistency
  • Life skills are taught in ways that fit the boys’ reality
  • Mental health, gender equity, and rights are addressed together

“The training has changed our lives - most especially mine” – Tsita

In 2025, this work was recognized with a UN Sustainable Development Goals Award.

What Your Donation Makes Possible

With your support, 100 herd boys will take part in a six-month program later in 2026 that helps them move from isolation to leadership.

The program includes:

✔ Life skills and confidence building
✔ Education on rights, gender equity, and healthy relationships
✔ Sexual and reproductive health information and services
✔ One-on-one psychosocial support
✔ Engagement with families, employers, and community leaders
✔ Advocacy against sexual and gender-based violence
✔ Essential relief items (blankets, boots, socks)

The Impact

By the end of the program:

  • Herd boys understand their rights, and the rights of women and girls
  • Participants gain the confidence to speak up and advocate
  • Harmful myths about masculinity and violence are challenged
  • Communities begin to see herd boys as leaders - not outcasts

These boys return to their communities with knowledge, skills, and a sense of responsibility - not just to themselves, but to others.

Why Boys Matter for Gender Equity

Preventing violence against women and girls requires working with boys.

When herd boys learn:

  • Respect and empathy
  • Healthy expressions of masculinity
  • Accountability and allyship

They become part of the solution - not the problem.
